Let's become better photographers together. Join me each week for tips & tricks on composition, post-processing, and everything in between. My goal with each video is you learn one "thing" about photography. And yes... you might see a healthy amount of seascapes on my channel.
Oddly Satisfying Black & White Refinements With The Color Mixer in Lightroom
When you convert monochrome LUTs to camera profiles or when you import other black & white camera profiles into Lightroom or Camera Raw, there’s something extra-interesting that happens. When you apply these profiles, the B&W panel DOES NOT show up in the editing adjustments. Instead, the Color Mixer is still there. And you can use it!
It’s oddly satisfying using the Color Mixer controls to refine a black and white image. The Color Mixer offers a lot of control and precision in treating colors in your photo. And for certain types of monochrome images, you can use its power to transform ordinary photos into stunning black and white art.
Stay tuned for tips, tricks, and inspiration for your next photo editing project.

Using Curves To Balance Exposure In Your Landscape Photos

Was fast until the last update.2025.5. The first couple of photos are fast but after that they are minutes loading. It's quicker to close down and start again..
There is just one word for that... Brilliant. Well done, Scott. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
This was a great video. You gave me so many ideas on how to make a photo look like a painting. Thanks for all your great presentations.
You are so welcome, Rick. Thanks as always for watching.
Thanks so much, Scott. One of your best videos ever. I struggle to come up with new ways to ways to edit my landscapes. These have definitely help me out of my processing rut. I wrote all five recipes on a card that is on my desk. I also appreciate that you don’t drag things out. Nice job.
Great to hear, Ted. Hope all is well in your world.
Fine in it's day but today it's a no competition for content aware and replacement that On1 realy, really needs to have to remain viable. Content Aware is now in Lightroom, but as we all hate Adobe and we all refuse to buy into their subscription model, the balls in ON1's court. Replacing spots is all good and well, but when you're trying to remove objects such as cables, lights and signs against complex backgrounds, On1 doesn't cut it anymore.
No doubt... what Lightroom has now is phenomenal. Recently posted about it ua-cam.com/video/Y-dm0N-sLhQ/v-deo.html
I'm having serious issues using the ON1 Raw exporting feature I'm trying to export over 30 images at once but it keeps overwriting the first image for example... First image is exported 1.jpg ok then when the second image comes up it supposed to be 2.jpg but it's 1.jpg again but it's a different image overwriting it and I don't know what I'm doing wrong? I'm on version 2024.5 MAX version.
I'd look at the file naming template. If you're already using a sequence number to uniquely name the exported photos, then I'm not sure. Gotta call ON1 for that.
@@ScottDavenport ok I'll look into it later.
Very cool, Scott. Thanks very much.
Very welcome
The tutorial is great and THANK YOU for posting it. I am new to Lightroom Classic and I have followed the tutorial but all the changes that I made in masking it did not save after exporting it. Can you please provide an information on how to save it with all the masking changes? Thanks a lot!
Very helpful, thanks. I haven't used LUTs or camera profiles much but need to explore that added capability.
Certainly check out the camera profiles. Even if you don't convert LUTs. Have fun!
Great ... tutorial! I particularly like you showing Option Click Preset Panel to access Create Profile
yeah... that little bit was sufficiently squirreled away :)
so this only works with lightroom?
Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and Adobe Camera RAW. If you're using other editors (ON1, Luminar) ... you already have a LUT filter, so import your LUTs and you're off and running.
@@ScottDavenportthanks Scott, very interesting. To add to Davids question, can you do this to LT Stanalone version 6? The latter is the only Lightroom editor that I have and use it on my old 2011 MBKPro. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent tutorial!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm not going to lie though; I would love a step-by-step tutorial.
I'm still waiting for ON1 to have a "refine mask" button like Capture One has (totally spoiled me). It is a lot more useful, built still not as user friendly in the UI department - for me.
Been thinking about either the 20 or 25. 25 and 30 seems so big though. The reason I want to buy a bag like this is because it's smaller and lightweight. But maybe after seeing how large they are I might just bring my backpack with me for my trips. 😂 Not sure yet. I really like to have my Sony 14mm, 35mm and 85mm with me together with my camera. And then have the camera + 1 lens on the Capture Clip so the bag should just hold 2 lenses.
If you're just carrying lenses in the bag, the MM20 should be fine for an outing where the body+mounted lens is *always* out. For a body plus 3 lenses *in* the bag... I think the MM30 is a better choice.
Even though there's a whole section on their website asking for feature ideas, On1 still takes the 'Apple' approach of 'we know what works best for you'. I wish they would stop messing with the UI and concentrate on improving the underlying software. Brilliance AI is bloody awful.
I've just installed Photo Raw 2024 on a Macbook Pro and compared to the speed of lightroom it is a disaster. It runs at half the speed of smell. Calling it blazingly fast is a serious misnomer.
Thanks, Scott!
You bet! Thanks again for the early look at the pack!!
Thank you, Scott! Looks like another great product from Think Tank! I'm still using the original Mirrorless Mover 30i which has held up extremely well over the years since I moved to the Sony FE mount system. The older I get, the less gear I want to carry with me. especially if I'm doing any lengthy walking or hiking. For hiking I've recently started using the Think Tank Turnstyle 10 v2, which great for a camera and extra lens, but doesn't accommodate water or tripod. But it is very comfortable and is so easy to access on the move. This one looks like a good option for airline travel and hiking but for me, only if it's not overloaded. I've been using a Manfrotto backpack for airline travel which has. a removable camera module so it can be used as a conventional backpack. This Think Tank looks like it might be a possible replacement down the road. The Think Tank Photo Backlight Sprint also looks like a nice option. Again, thanks for this and all the other helpful and informative video tutorials!
It is an excellent pack (and we expect that... it's ThinkTank!). This pack is great for travel... and you don't have to load it up. I had it about 60% camera gear and 40% snacks :) Haven't tried the Turnstyle ...
I also have some think tank gear, use their holsters when I need one of them. Like other bags/packs I wish the dividers were a bit better padded and would have two velcro tabs on each end forming a "T" so the velcro stuck both side giving a stronger attachment. I notice the horizontal /middle one is starting to peel off one one end. Happens with all my bags as well so I end up using a double divider on the main weight bearing spots.
Cool idea! Thanks for sharing that. I'm thinking of the bin of the various velcro dividers I have gathered over the years... might have a. new use for some of them :)
PortaBrace dividers all have two velcro strips on the ends for the "T" attachment. Once in place though they can be difficult to remove.
@@mark_barrentine Thanks for the reply, I will have a look at them
Does this enable to transfer my presets from one computer to another
No... this is for exporting your photos to another image format (JPG, TIFF, etc.) with multiple settings in a single operation. You can export/import adjustment presets (the ones that develop your photos) from the Presets tab. Not sure about Export presets themselves... might need to hunt down the folders they are in and move them manually. Check the Adobe help pages for file location (a decent resource: helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/preference-file-and-other-file-locations.html)
Do they realease a new version every year and when?
The historical pattern is a new major version each year, around October/November.
Hi Scott, I would like to know if you have ever used third party ink replacement refills for your printer to reduce costs. I read reviews from many different sources that say there’s no difference. I would appreciate your opinion. Roger
Hi Roger... I've only used brand ink.
On1 printing options and additions for software proofing have changed how the software and we have to work. It would be good if the printing options video was update to reflect the changes and how to handle colors that can't be printed as seen on screen using Selective and Adaptive rendering.
My watermark is blurry, pixelated when I put it in the corner and make it the right size. It’s a png file and that always worked fine in LR but not now in On1
Thanks for the video Scott. How to you move around the magnified screen and still be able to pick the areas to work on. I loose the super select when I try to move around the magnified screen.
Hi David ... a couple of options. Use the Navigator at upper right or hold down the spacebar and the click/drag to pan around. If you're using a trackpad, a two-finger drag will also pan (my Mac does this).
Ai is invading everything but, as I used to say and keep saying, too many contenders !!!. Let's see what each one has to offer. So far, LR is my winner but... future remains to be seen. Ai is going to grow very very fast in our software and in our lives, for good and for bad Thanks Scott
Thanks for these useful tips!
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching
Hi Scott, as my ON1 go to Guru, I thought I'd ask you this question regarding searching in ON1 2024. In ON1 2023 there was an Advanced Search feature that really did let you search for anything and I got used to using that to see which photos in a folder I hadn't edited. This was useful for either workflow (to see what I still had to work on) or to cull images I decided I didn't wany any more. While the search bar in 2024 is good and I can search for any kind of edits I have applied, I can't see any option to search for images I haven't edited yet, or am I missing something? I know I can work around this by searching for edited images, marking them say 5 stars, and then searching for images with less than 5 stars. But it just seems odd that ON1 seems to have omitted a 'Not Equal To' search option. Thanks
That's a Metadata search. Choose "Edited" from the list of metadata options, and *within* that list is second "Edited" entry - a global "are edits present" property. Match with a rule of "is not True".
@@ScottDavenport Scott, once again you are an absolute star. I was expecting to find that search in the attribute section, but you're right, metadata does everything I wanted - Thank You !
thank you, very informative especially about the 'option key' to remove AI selection. just love the new upgrade on this software.
You're welcome, Steve. Have fun!
Very good improvements in super select and quick brush, although they seem to do the same thing and therefore somewhat. That said, I’m not complaining. Thanks for the video - like others have commented, moving slowly is a great tip for refining the mask.
Yes, both the Quick Mask AI brush and SuperSelect operate in the same way. As a long-time user of ON1, I often instinctively apply a filter first and then a mask, so having the AI smarts in the Quick Mask helps me when I've forgotten about SuperSelect (old habits can be hard to break!).
Great video as always Scott. I uploaded the new version today and can no longer see my images in browse mode! Should I bin the whole program and reload it or do you think there is a simpler fix? Also I lost the option of taking images from iPhotos straight into On1raw. I get a message saying I need to allow “helper” but have no idea where this is or how to activate it. Hope you can help.
That's a question for ON1 support. Haven't experience that.
I installed the update yesterday but have not tried it yet, will try it on a spider soon to see if I can select the legs etc
Good luck!
@@ScottDavenport Just tryed a few spiders and they masked really well, very impressed. Only problem is ON1 is running so slow I cant edit with it. May have to do a reinstall. First opening after the update caused ON1 to download some modules that took nearly an hour. Never seen this before so the update may not have gone well for me.
It's great, but I have to learn the new user inner face all over again. If you ever make a video of the UIF that would be appreciated . Thank you for the update Scott.
I don't recall having done a general UI video ... my ON1 book covers it all. scottdavenportphoto.com/products/on1-photo-raw-essentials-2024
the voice from that mic is weird and flat
Thanks, you've described me perfectly (he said, in a weird, flat voice)

Great video, Scott Davenport; not used before, but that looks like a GREAT TOOL! I Should use it quite a bit 😊
Intersect is excellent... I use it all the time. Have fun!
Nice video Scott - especially the 2 hints of moving slower and how you selected the leaf. I was doing it in separate steps.
Glad it was helpful!
@@ScottDavenport everything you do is helpful
@@ednsb Thanks *so* much (blushing)
Thanks Scott. For the videos. Question. Is it quite easy to get rid of haloing that I see? As in the trees and hair? I've images with both of bison that are dark, the way I want them, against grass which is light, and the way I want it. But 'they', the Buffalo look copy/pasted. I just cannot get it right. ON1, PS/LR, NEO. Gorgeous image if I can get this. Thanks.
Halos can be a problem. I've done a few articles and videos over the year on how to remove them. Here are a few: scottdavenportphoto.com/blog/how-to-deal-with-halos-in-landscape-photos scottdavenportphoto.com/blog/how-to-fix-halos-in-your-landscape-photos-using-on1 scottdavenportphoto.com/blog/remove-halos-like-a-pro-in-lightroom
@ScottDavenport thanks. I know you had some but I just not have had time to scroll through your great library of works. I do have all the tool. PS, LR, NEO, ON1 as I believe in a toolbox of 1/2", 9/16", 5/8" wrenches 🔧, each to do its job. Don't want to round off any nuts.
How did you originally make your signature?
I contracted it. PhotoLogo if memory serves.
@@ScottDavenport When I design my watermark signature and save it as a Tiff, when I try to use it from the brush section in On1 Raw for 2024 it shows a rectangle around it. I tried saving as a PNG file and then I can not import it. I would much sooner be able to use it as a brush then use it from the save and export section of On1.
I've added it to your course for completeness.
Super Select AI is pretty amazing in its improvement.
I agree... It is a *very* nice improvement.
Now, what is the difference between this method, compared to a Radial Mask an change the colors inside there?
Hi Paul... not too much. Though now that LR has the Color Mixer, I'd use that in conjunction with a radial or other mask for targeted color changes.
I've been playing around with a couple of images since originally watching this video, and I have definitely found these useful.Thank you.
Great to hear, Paul. Have fun!!
again,great tips, very helpfull.thank s a lot
You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Good to see non AI masking techniques still have a place in processing. I try and avoid reliance on AI masking as I wish to become competent with the masking tools and I feel this approach helps develop a better understanding of the masking / editing process - to get 'under the hood' as the old saying goes.
Thanks for watching. AI has its place, as do the “old-school” methods. Have fun!
Some great tips, quick and simple - just need to remember them!
Absolutely! Bookmarks help! 😀
Wow! Totally new stuff there. Best video I've seen in a while (now I've got a good bit more experience, I often find I'm not learning anything new - but it was ALL good!) Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
Excellent! Thanks for this. Really packed with helpful information.
Sure thing! Thanks for watching
Very helpful, thanks. I see creating some styles to help apply these adjustments
Yes! Styles are perfect for those 1-filter finishers.
How do you clean up a mask that was created with the super select tool? For example if the selection bleeds into an area that you don't want to change. Can you erase a small part of the mask?
Yes. After applying a filter/adjustment, reach for any other masking tool to refine it. The brush is a good starting point.
@@ScottDavenport Thank you . .
